I'm fairly new to the running game. Throughout my teenage years I would run now and again but had little passion for it. When I entered my twenties my great love was rugby and I would run occasionally, but only for the purpose of being in shape for rugby, the idea that running could be an end in itself was beyond my comprehension. As my twenties became my thirties I was no longer playing rugby, in fact I was no longer doing very much of anything to stay in shape physically, I knew something had to change.
It was over the winter of 2006 that this change began to take place, I went out and ran around our neighborhood, a loop of approximately 1.7 miles. I had to stop several times on this run to catch my breath, I couldn't believe how out of shape I had become. It took all the mental stamina I could muster not to pack it in and quit. I stuck with it.
On April 29, 2006 I ran my first 5k in 11 years with a time of 25:08. I knew I could knock those 8 seconds off and go sub-25! So I kept kept training and by the time of the Virginia Run Turkey Trot in November I was able to post a respectable 23:29. Between these two 5K races I managed to complete the Rock and Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach in a time of 1:58:15 and the Army Ten Miler in 1:23:40. I was hooked on running!
This blog serves as my online training journal in which I record my thoughts and reflections on the wonderful life of a runner.
